Model United Nations (informally abbreviated as Model UN or MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants in civics, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. In the Model UN, students take on roles as foreign diplomats and participate in a simulated session of an intergovernmental organization (IGO). Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of high school and university students participate in various Model United Nations (MUN) conferences around the world. The purpose of a MUN conference is to allow participants to experience international politics and diplomacy in a setting that is very similar to the real United Nations. Delegates face the difficult challenge of setting aside their own personal views on a specific topic and accurately protecting the interests of the country they represent. In addition, they must not only keep in mind their national interest, but, in the spirit of the United Nations, also serve the notion of international cooperation in order to protect and promote such interests as global peace, security, and prosperity. It requires not only strong debating and negotiating skills, but also a thorough investigation of the issue to be discussed and its political, societal, and legal background.
Our High School MUN Club has joined two conferences LEMUN and TIMUN. There is one more conference in our program. It is RIMUN (Rome International Model United Nations) will be held between 18 - 23 March 2010. |
